The attraction for Nitro Nostalgia racing is very much a focus and dream for Mississauga Ontario\u2019s Randy Caddell.<\/p>\n

This independent drag racer has over the past few seasons within Eastern Canada been busy learning the ropes for one of drag racing\u2019s most demanding categories \u2014 after acquiring a\u00a0nitro-burning Chevy Nova Funny Car.<\/p>\n

Caddell, who works as a fleet manager for trucking company TBN Transport, has along with involvement of his two sons been dipping into his program as best as he can and as\u00a0funding will allow over the past 3 seasons or so.<\/p>\n

\u201cI first got involved with this car back in 2015,\u201d Randy revealed.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThis Nova was first built for Army Armstrong in 2010.\u00a0 <\/span>It is a Hadman chassis 125 inch car with a 2-speed Lenco and has a later model TFX 470 CID nitro engine program.\u00a0 <\/span>Before we got \u2014 it did have all the parts updated for IHRA\u2019s pro nostalgia funny car class.\u00a0 <\/span>It had been sold to Mike Arquilla in 2011 and he ran it under the name \u201cBad Attitude\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While Randy\u2019s involvement with the NFC is relatively recent \u2014 his participation in drag racing is not.\u00a0 <\/span>He has been a drag racer since age 16 \u2014 running a series of fast street and ET bracket cars.\u00a0 <\/span>In 2001 he campaigned a Mike Bos-built Top Dragster.\u00a0 <\/span>But during all of that time he did have an apparent eye on the future.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI have always wanted one (Funny Car) but because of raising a family \u2014 it just meant it would have to wait.\u201d he added.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI watched the pro nitro class from the side until the time was right to jump in.\u00a0 <\/span>I was friends with Pat Minick (Farkonas-Coil-Minick – who passed away in Jan\/19<\/i>) who was an influence and supported a beginner like me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the past three season\u2019s Randy Caddell\u2019s steps forward with the class with his “Nitro Maniac” Nova have been gradual but progressive too.\u00a0 <\/span>The Nova did run a 4.11 secs (1\/8th mile) and a 6.99 secs (1\/4 mile) best so far.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are just getting comfortable with it now,\u201d he continued. \u201cMy sons are growing into it and taking more leading rolls in the crewing.\u00a0 <\/span>I want to thank them and wife (Susan) for helping me and my dreams grow.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But there is actually some more to this story then just his race team\u2019s aspirations for their fuel-burning Nova Funny Car.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Late last season Randy purchased the \u201cBad to the Bone\u201d \u201948 Fiat which Jeff Arend famously drove within Canada early in his drag racing career.\u00a0 <\/span>Randy acquired that car from Doug Cadman\u2019s museum and is making plans and taking steps to run that car again soon \u2014 with possible nitro power.\u00a0 <\/span>He has also confirmed that veteran Canadian driver Paul Noakes (London ON) may also become part of his team\u2019s equation \u2014 as a team adviser and possibly as a driver too.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving Paul working with us can only help us improve,\u201d he added. \u201cWith a driver of his caliber involved and in the seat \u2014 we can learn a lot more.\u00a0 <\/span>We want to book the cars where ever we can as often as we can. The learning curve\u00a0is sharp and fast \u2014 but certainly worth it .\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019d like to eventually have a two-car show that would be attractive to track operators \u2014 Ontario and east.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
